On PowerPoint presentation look at the slides showing
minibeasts.
Explain that the sessions are going to be about sculpture.
Explain what sort of things are sculptures e.g. those made by
people and natural ones e.g. logs, rocks etc
Show the pictures of Michael Turner sculptures of insects made
from metal. Talk about the names of the insects and what do the
children think they are made from.
Explain that we are going to making sculptured minibeasts using
different materials and techniques.
This week we will use playdo/clay / modelling material
Give each child a small amount of playdo/clay / modelling
material. Let them explore it. Look at pictures or models of
minibeasts and ask them to try and make one – try rolling,
pressing, squeezing, stretching etc.
Make display of minibeasts. |
P1(i)
move their fingers when playdo is put into their hand
P1(ii)
briefly squeeze the playdo in the hand
P2(i)
press the playdo down with help
P2(ii)
if playdo is put into their hand they can squeeze it by closing
their hand
P3(i)
if playdo is put into their hand they look at its different
shape after they have squeezed it
P3(ii)
bang the playdo with a tool to try to flatten it
P4
make marks in the playdo with fingers
P5
press, squeeze, roll the playdo
P6
roll the playdo to make a worm
P7
make a round shape to symbolise a minibeast
P8
make a round shape and then roll some playdo to make legs to
stick on the minibeast |

Resources:
PowerPoint presentation,
pictures of sculpture by Michael Turner,
clay / modelling materials, any sculptures that you have,
pictures of minibeasts in books or posters, models of minibeasts
(click on words underlined to go to that resource or lesson
plan) |
Points to note:
The modelling materials will be chosen to give all children
access to being able to do the necessary experiments with it –
even with some help |
