What were seaside holidays like when our parents or grandparents were young

 

P1(i)  encounter experiences

P4 recognise someone on pictures of the past

Explain that sessions on the seaside holidays already done have shown what the seaside is like now but it was different when their parents and grandparents were young. 

Show the seaside pictures of the book in resources and explain that we will make a class book with the pictures.

Talk about and show pictures of all the specific things that were at the seaside then e.g. windmills, flags on sandcastles, donkey rides, carousels, ice cream, candyfloss etc. Make some of these things.

Put head into a cardboard model of person dressed in swimming clothes of the past with head part cut out - have photo taken.

 

 

 

P1(i)  startle when the windmill moves in front of them

P1(ii) attend to the windmills as they go round

 

P2(i) reject / accept the taste of ice cream

 

P2(ii) recognise the parachute and smile when it moves round and round

P3(i) watch with surprise when the windmill turns round as they blow

P3(ii) become excited when they are given ice cream to eat

P4 recognise their parent or grandparent on photo at the seaside

P5 point to /say/sign various objects on the pictures of the seaside

P6 know that it is their head on the photo of the card ’model’ and think it is funny

P7 notice the donkey on picture giving rides on the beach

P8 use the words then and now to explain what was on the pictures then but now we have …..

 

Resources:

Pictures to make books, instructions to make a windmill, paper and patterns for small flags, sand, parachute, cardboard model with head cut out, camera,

Points to note:

It would be helpful if a book using the pictures in the resource ‘pictures to make book’ was made before the session so that children could look at in groups or individually

·       sequence photographs into a time series of three time periods by identifying differences between past and present times

·       use time related vocabulary

·       find out about holidays in the past from photos or pictures

Explain that sessions on the seaside holidays already done have shown what the seaside is like now but it was different when their parents and grandparents were young. 

Show the seaside pictures and photos of the book in resources and explain that we will make a class book with the pictures.

Points to note:
